Saturday, June 4: CABOTS IOP1
Day 7 of CABOTS IOP 1 observations. TOPAZ data were taken from 09:10 - 00:54 PDT. Very hot (44 C), moderately hazy, a few high clouds until midday. The boundary layer (BL) rose from 300 m to about 1000 m AGL at 13:30 PDT when it merged with the overlying residual layer. BL ozone increased from 50 ppbv to 90-95 ppbv around 13:30 PDT. BL ozone stayed between 75 and 90 ppbv thru the afternoon and early evening before decreasing at night. A polluted layer extending from above the BL to about 2000 m AGL was observed during the entire measurement period. This layer contained enhanced aerosols and ozone values from 75 to 90 ppbv. After 21:00 a clean low-ozone layer between 2500 and 3000 m AGL was observed. The TOPAZ lidar observations overlapped with the midday and early evening missed approaches at Visalia Airport by the Scientific Aviation Mooney aircraft.
