GHIS Global Hawk In-flight turbulence Sensor autonomous instrument to detect 2-axis local accelerations caused by turbulence and local vibrations, measure local air temperature and pressure, and measure the voltage of the aircraft DC power on the NASA Global Hawk Unmanned Aircraft System (GH UAS) Ru-Shan Gao, Steve Ciciora inside of GHIS GHIS
NO-LIF Laser Induced Fluorescence for Nitric Oxide single-photon LIF technique for measuring nitric oxide (NO) demonstrated to provide the best available measurement of NO (lowest detection limit and uncertainty) while reducing some aspects of experimental effort compared to the more common chemiluminescence instrumentation Andrew Rollins NO instrument installed on NASA DC-8
O3 Ozone Photometer autonomous, precise, and accurate ozone measurements in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UT/LS) from airborne platforms including the NASA Global Hawk Unmanned Aircraft System (GH UAS) Troy Thornberry SP2 over O3 installed on the aircraft SP2 over O3 on the cart in the lab UAS O3
POPS Portable Optical Particle Spectrometer Small, lightweight, low power-consumption autonomous instrument measuring aerosol size distributions with diameters between 140 nm and 2.5 µm. Frequently deployed in varied environments from the surface to the stratosphere (to >25 km) using ground-based networks, weather balloons, crewed and uncrewed aircraft. Lizzy Asher, Troy Thornberry POPS
SO2-LIF Laser Induced Fluorescence for Sulfur Dioxide autonomous instrument for quantification of sulfur dioxide at single-part per trillion mixing ratios in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UT/LS) from airborne platforms, including the NASA WB-57 and NASA Global Hawk Unmanned Aircraft System (GH UAS) Andrew Rollins SO2 instrument GH preflight
SP2 and HD-SP2 Single Particle Soot Photometer The SP2 is an aerosol instrument that quantifies, for individual particles, the refractory black carbon (rBC) mass content, the particle optical size, and detects and presence of materials internally mixed with the rBC. It is an extremely sensitive instrument that is also highly insensitive to changes in the morphology and mixing state of the rBC. A dry and humidified SP2 have been paired to create the Humidified-Dual SP2 (HD-SP2), which can quantify water uptake by the materials internally mixed with rBC. Joshua Schwarz, Ru-Shan Gao inside of SP2 SP2 in the rack on the NOAA WP-3D
