Mackenzie Smith plan: - Expected PBL ~ 8,000 ft, so try for profile up to ~ 10,000 ft. Vertical profiles located at 1) outset (between KMOT and pt. 1), 2) in the west (south of pt. 2 - make sure we've returned to background levels of ethane/methane), and 3) end (between pt. 9 and KMOT). - Three flasks (northern leg, above In-flight notes: 5:23:30 PM 5/21/2014 first vertical profile - passed cloud base at ~ 5,000 ft-ish (forgot time stamp --> around 5:32 I think) - cloud base on vert. prof. descent ~ 6,000 ft 5:44 PM 5/21/2014 so far, observed winds (wind from aircraft cockpit and wind displ. in IGOR showing easterly direction for first leg (KMOT to pt. 13) - pretty much parallel to flight path. Thus not much enhancement of anything seen. 5:51 PM 5/21/2014 passed a flare on right about 1 minute prior 5:52 PM 5/21/2014 Wind seems to be a little more SE going from pt. 13 to pt. 2 - seeing some small and broad enhancements in ethane/methane 5:54:00 PM 5/21/2014 flares start to be seen off to the left of aircraft - seen in data as sharp eth/meth peaks - wind dir. ~ 120-150 deg. 6:01:40 PM 5/21/2014 - Drilling rig spotted to left of Tw. Otter --> cause of larger > 20 ppb eth. enhancement? 6:02:40 PM 5/21/2014 - start flask sample 1 6:04 PM 5/21/2014 - note: ethane and methane enhancements look nicely correlated and are of a similar magnitude (~20 to 30 ppb) on this flight leg (pt. 13 to pt. 2). 6:06-6:07-ish PM 5/21/2014 tall pipe flares black carbon enhancement from 6:19 PM 5/21/2014 passing gas plant on the left of Otter 6:28 PM 5/21/2014 - went over feedlot --> methane spike with no ethane! 6:37:00 PM 5/21/2014 - begin dip to 600 agl to survey gas plant near pt. 8 6:47 PM 5/21/2014 - wind going from pt. 8 to pt. 9 is from N (NE to NW), with lots of fluctuations --> think we're seeing some stuff, so stay on flight track and at alt. (1000 agl) for a bit. 7:03 PM 5/21/2014 enormous flare to left and fly over of a separate 7:05:40 PM 5/21/2014 depart from path to circle three flares - alot BC seen by Jeff around here 7:12 PM 5/21/2014 start a circling vertical profile to look at mixing with vertical - take flask #2 on this vert. prof. 7:20 PM 5/21/2014 cloud deck looks to be at about 7500 to 8000 ft. 7:22 PM 5/21/2014 as we get down to ~ 4000 agl, see big ethane peak, apparently crossed over flares again 7:25 PM 5/21/2014 do a third flask at the bottom of the vert. profile, while we still have at least some ethane enhancement 7:34 PM 5/21/2014 giant power plant to the left --> maybe come back at some point?looks like massive amt of smoke (maybe water though?) took a video on phone. 7:40:30 PM 5/21/2014 three small fires/smoke spotted to right of Tw. Otter L2 Tim Newberger 9:28 PM 5/21/2014 some burning near point 1 will attempt to fly through 9:30 PM 5/21/2014 in the plume, some property owner burning very small fire, calibration on picarro timed perfectly with plume fly through. doh 9:59 PM 5/21/2014 big ethane 130 ppb and methane 2.2 ppm spikes about 1 -2 minutes earlier, passed north of a well pad with a large pond, Jeff took photo 10:09 PM 5/21/2014 spike 1 minute earlier in ethane 15 ppb, we were down wind of a well pad with a tanker truck just leaving the site.
