Plan: Mass balance, pts KMOT --> 9 --> 8 --> 18 --> 17. stay at 1000 agl. Vert. profs. between KMOT-9 (right from takeoff), 8-3, and 17-KMOT. Flasks - 1 on KMOT-->9 in upwind/background, 4 on 18-->17 evenly spaced in upwind plume, 1 on 17-->KMOT. Flight notes: Mackenzie Smith, L1 Tim Newberger, L2 4:10 PM 5/22/2014 - start first VP as soon as we takeoff. PBL estimate ~ 8,000 - 11000 ft ? two dips in water; cloud base --> clouds weren't really apparent, just haze 4:15 PM 5/22/2014 - wind direction actually looks S/SE as predicted 4:36:10 PM 5/22/2014 - some CH4/CO2 spikes as we fly over lake/river near pt. 9. (no ethane peak --> biogen.methane) 4:46:40 PM 5/22/2014 - pilots reported that we were passing over some flares - small pk in ethane up to ~12 ppb. 4:57:14 PM 5/22/2014 - take flask #1 5:12 PM 5/22/2014 - start en route vertical profile as soon as we round pt. 8. PBL est. ~ 9000 -1050 (based on when water dropped). 5:33 PM 5/22/2014 - winds now mostly S on flight leg from pt 8 to pt 18 - after vert. prof. after pt 8, ethane returned to around 5 ppb/methane 1.9 ppm (mixing ratios from about 2/3rds along the leg) --> not sure if that's enhancement? - ethane sort of increases to 5-10 ppb about 75% of the way along the path from pt 8 to pt 18. winds still almost exactly from south, so not sure if we can get useful info on where the upwind plume ends in the west from the pt 8 to pt 18 flight leg. especially if winds change back to SE for second flight of the day. -fairly large plume enhancement seen at 48.75 lat., -104 (eth up to 25 ppb/meth up to 1.94 ppm), so plume started on north/south leg JUST before turning east at pt 18. probably should go further east on flight #2. 5:50 PM 5/22/2014 - temporarily disabled picarro calibration until almost back to minot so we can get nice downwind plume 5:52 PM 5/22/2014 - take flask #2 5:52 PM 5/22/2014 - on downwind transect (pt 18 to pt 17), enhancements above background: ethane ~ 20 ppb, methane ~ 40 ppb. 6:00 PM 5/22/2014 - take flask #3 6:06 PM 5/22/2014 - almost hit a pelican 6:09:12 PM 5/22/2014 - take flask #4 6:17:30 PM 5/22/2014 - take flask #5 6:23 PM 5/22/2014 - start vert. prof. PBL estimate ~ 9000 - 10000 ft, cloud height also looks to be around 9000 ft 6:28:30-ish PM 5/22/2014 - take flask #6 6:34 PM 5/22/2014 - do Picarro calibration L2 7:30 PM 5/22/2014 Begin log for L 2 Planning to manually run picarro standards, 1 during taxi to take off, 1 on west end of leg near FE18, 1 back on east side of leg near or after FE17 generally flying at 1500 ft agl Also planning a vertical spiral in center of FE17 to FE18 leg, preferably in the plume. 7:48 PM 5/22/2014 DASTEMP at 39.1 just prior to taxi 39.5 at takeoff. 8:16 PM 5/22/2014 fill flask 1 8:31 PM 5/22/2014 capture flask 2 8:47 PM 5/22/2014 capture flask 3 9:19 PM 5/22/2014 capture flask 4 9:36 PM 5/22/2014 capture flask 5 9:51 PM 5/22/2014 capture flask 6 10:15 PM 5/22/2014 crop burning , co may be inluenced 10:19 PM 5/22/2014 run both cal gases for picarro on approach to landing
