Thursday, June 2: CABOTS IOP1
Day 5 of CABOTS IOP 1 observations. TOPAZ data were taken from 5:36 - 19:12 PDT. Hot (39 C), moderately hazy, thin high clouds during most of the day. The 1000-acre Chimney Fire was burning in the Sierra about 70 miles SE of Visalia. The boundary layer (BL) was very shallow in the early AM (a few 10s of meters) and rose to 500-600 m AGL in the PM. BL ozone increased from the 10s ppbv in the early AM to around 70 ppbv at 13:00 PDT. BL ozone fell and rose several times in the PM and peaked around 18:30 PDT at approx. 85 ppbv. A polluted residual layer was observed until 13:00 PDT. A layer of slightly enhanced ozone and aerosol descended from 2000 m AGL in the AM down to about 1000 m AGL in the late PM. In addition, a thin aerosol layer was observed around 4000 m AGL, which may have been associated with the Chimney Fire.
