Saturday, June 18: CABOTS IOP1
Day 21 of CABOTS IOP 1 observations. TOPAZ data were taken from 08:40 - 17:36 PDT. DC8 flyovers at 24 and 2 kft (1 as part of SARP. Ira Leifer operated his mobile lab next to TOPAZ for about an hour near midday. Warm today (33C)Northwesterly winds in the morning, shifting to the north in the early afternoon and back to the northwest in the late afternoon. Widespread high clouds with contrail cirrus and mare's tails. Lidar data appear similar to on June 17, with relatively low ozone throughtout the lower troposphere, but with much less aerosol in the BL. An elevated aerosol layer descending from 1600 m in the morning merged with the relatively deep BL near midday. This layer also had higher ozone (50-60 ppbv) than the air both above and below. Ozone was very low in the lowest 800 m during the morning, but increased to more than 60 ppbv in the BL in the afternoon. Very low (25-30 ppbv) concentrations were seen around 2000 m in the afternoon, with the concentrations increasing to more than 50 ppbv just above 4000m. Surface ozone reached a maximum of about 58 ppbv.
