Daily Summary:

Friday, August 5: CABOTS IOP2
Day 19 of CABOTS IOP 2 observations. TOPAZ data were taken from 08:09 to 01:13 PDT. Cooler today with an offical high of 34C (93F) at the airport met tower. Hazy, Sierra Foothills were invisible all day. Southwesterly surface winds in the morning, veering to a westerly direction in the mid-afternoon. Surface ozone increased very gradually thru early afternoon, plateaued between 1400 and 1800 PDT at around 65 ppbv*, and then decreased throughout the evening. The BL grew to about 800 m AGL. TOPAZ observed a polluted layer above the BL that extended to between 1600 and 2300 m AGL. This layer contained many smoke-related aerosol layers of varying thickness. Ozone concentrations ranged from about 65 to 85 ppbv. TOPAZ observed an ozone layer containing about 75 ppbv of ozone between 4 and 5.5 km AGL in the morning. That layer descended to between 2 and 3.5 km AGL by 0100 PDT. The RAQMS model had forecast a tongue of moderately high ozone to descend into the lower atmosphere over Central and Southern California as part of a stratospheric intrusion event.
