Daily Summary:

Saturday, August 6: CABOTS IOP2
Day 20 of CABOTS IOP 2 observations. TOPAZ data were taken from 08:45 to 22:13 PDT. Offical high of 36C (97F) at the airport met tower. Hazy, Sierra Foothills were invisible all day. South/southeasterly surface winds in the morning, veering to a westerly direction by mid-afternoon, turning northerly and then southwesterly in the evening. Surface ozone increased thru early afternoon, plateaued between 1400 and 1900 PDT at around 70 ppbv*, and then dropped abruptly. The BL grew to about 1100 m AGL by the mid-afternoon, quite a bit deeper than on previous days. Moderately high ozone in the polluted layer above the BL appeared to get entrained in the BL. The ozone layer that had been detected the previous day and was most likely associated with a stratospheric intrusion kept descending until the bottom edge of the layer reached about 1 km AGL around 1800 PDT, after which it was replaced by a lower ozone/moderately high aerosol plume. HYSPLIT trajectory analysis indicated that this plume was most likely advected from the Soberanes Fire. A second ozone layer was detected around 4 km AGL, which was likely another filament associated with the intrusion.
