Solomon Receives Goldschmidt Medal from the Geochemical Society

31 August 2006

Susan Solomon, senior scientist at the Chemical Sciences Division of ESRL, has been awarded the Goldschmidt Medal from the Geochemical Society. She was presented with the award at the 16th V.M. Goldschmidt Conference, held in Melbourne, Australia, from 27 August to 1 September 2006. The award, the highest honor of the Geochemical Society, recognizes Susan for her outstanding achievements in research regarding the Earth's ozone layer and climate.

Background: Quoting the Geochemical Society's website, "The Geochemical Society is a private nonprofit international scientific society founded to encourage the application of chemistry to the solution of geological and cosmological problems. Membership is international and diverse in background, encompassing such fields as organic geochemistry, high- and low-temperature geochemistry, petrology, meteoritics, fluid-rock interaction, and isotope geochemistry." The V.M. Goldschmidt Medal recognizes "major achievements in geochemistry or cosmochemistry, consisting of either a single outstanding contribution, or a series of publications that have had great influence on the field."

Significance: The Geochemical Society's award of the Goldschmidt Medal to Susan Solomon is a recognition that her scientific achievements cross many disciplinary boundaries. Indeed, her work in deciphering the cause of the Antarctic ozone hole is a prime illustration of the application of chemistry, physics, and meteorology to advancing the understanding of a complex geophysical phenomenon.
