NOAA Hosts Workshop on the 2006 Ozone Depletion Assessment

9 July 2007

A one-day Climate Change Science Program workshop on the 2006 international state-of-scientific-understanding assessment report, Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion: 2006, will be held on July 11 at the NOAA Science Center. The meeting is being jointly hosted by Chet Koblinsky of the Climate Program Office and A.R. Ravishankara of the ESRL Chemical Sciences Division, and several other NOAA scientists are involved in presentations and discussions of the workshop.

Background: The workshop is being held to inform CCSP agencies and stakeholders about the findings of the most recent international scientific assessment report regarding the stratospheric ozone layer. The 2006 ozone assessment was completed in accordance with the international agreement that protects the ozone layer, the United Nations Montreal Protocol. Over 190 nations have ratified the Montreal Protocol, including the U.S. Assessment reports are produced periodically by three panels in association with the Montreal Protocol, the Scientific Assessment Panel, the Environmental Effects Assessment Panel, and the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel. The workshop will include an overview of the Scientific Assessment Panel's 2006 ozone assessment, along with a discussion of the emerging issues and an evaluation of appropriate next steps in the research domain. Attendees will include several key scientists who led, authored, and/or reviewed the 2006 assessment report; Cochairs of the other two panels of the U.N. Montreal Protocol; representatives of CCSP agencies; government and industry stakeholders; and U.S. decisionmakers involved in the ozone depletion issue.

Significance: The workshop contributes to NOAA's mission within the Climate Goal: to understand climate variability and change to enhance society's ability to plan and respond. The one-day workshop will reach a broad spectrum of CCSP agencies and stakeholders who are involved in the ozone depletion issue, and afford them a key opportunity to discuss the very latest assessed scientific information available on the topic.
