A report of the OECD claims that urban pollution will become the biggest environmental cause of premature deaths in the coming decades, overtaking mass killers such as poor sanitation and the lack of clean drinking water. The report estimates that by 2050 3.6 million people will die prematurely from outdoor air pollution each year.
With its fast economic growth, Asia is particularly affected by air pollution. Several international programs are currently being developed to monitor, analyze and predict air pollution on the regional scales, making use of satellite and ground-based observations and advanced models and data assimilation methods. One of them, the PANDA project, supported by the European Commission and involving 14 Chinese and European research institutions, will be presented. It is part of a larger consortium, called AQAPA, currently in development to address the scientific questions related to air quality in a broad region from the west coast of India to Japan.
