The only practical way to consistently monitor air pollution with global coverage is by using satellites. My work measuring the optical properties of smoke will help improve the accuracy with which remote sensing techniques (e.g. those from satellites) can measure wildfire pollution. These measurements can help us understand how wildfires affect the health of people downwind from them, and also how wildfires (past, present, and future) affect how much sunlight is absorbed by the planet.
