Dr. Carsten Warneke is an Atmospheric Scientist and Research Physicist at NOAA's Chemical Sciences Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, with over two decades of experience in air quality and airborne atmospheric composition research. Dr. Warneke earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Innsbruck, Austria, in 1998. His expertise focuses on the measurement and modeling of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and aerosols using advanced instrumentation across various platforms, including airborne, shipborne, mobile, and ground-based systems.
Dr. Warneke currently serves as a Mission Lead for NOAA air quality and climate research programs and the Interagency Coordination Lead for large-scale, multi-agency aircraft campaigns, such as NOAA AEROMMA 2023, NOAA/NASA FIREX-AQ 2019, and NOAA SENEX 2013. He also leads the VOC group at NOAA CSL. He is a highly published researcher with currently 291 peer-reviewed publications, an h-index of 92, and over 24,000 citations. His contributions have been recognized with awards including the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal Award for service during the Marshall Fire, and multiple NASA Group Achievement and CIRES Outstanding Performance Awards for his field study leadership.
