Dr. Joost de Gouw was a Research Physicist with the Chemical Sciences Division of NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory from 2001 until 2018. His research was focused on the sources and chemical transformations of organic compounds in the atmosphere, and the role that these processes play in air quality and climate change. Dr. de Gouw developed and used field measurements of volatile organic compounds by mass spectrometry and gas chromatography from various platforms including ground sites, research ships and research aircraft.
While with CSD, Dr. de Gouw served as Principal and co-Principal Investigator on several NOAA field missions including the airborne Southeast Nexus (SENEX) study in 2013 and the airborne Shale Oil and Natural Gas Nexus (SONGNEX) study in 2015. He has been a Fellow of CIRES since 2008 and has served as Associate Director of CIRES' Environmental Chemistry Division since 2013. He was appointed an Adjoint Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2014. Dr. de Gouw also served as Editor and acting Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmospheres from 2009-2013.
Dr. Joost de Gouw received several awards for his work at CSD. He received the CIRES Outstanding Performance Award in 2007 for his work on the chemistry that forms organic aerosol from volatile organic compounds. He was a co-recipient of the Colorado Governor's Award for High-Impact Research in 2012 for his work on the environmental effects of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and again in 2014 for his work on the emissions associated with oil and gas production. In 2017, he was part of a team that received the NOAA OAR Outstanding Paper Award for his work on winter ozone formation in the Uintah Basin published in Nature. Dr. de Gouw was a Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher in 2017 and in 2018.
In August of 2018, Dr. Joost de Gouw became a faculty member with CIRES and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he continues his work on organic compounds in the atmosphere.
