ACCRONIM 2009
Activation of Continental Chloride by Reactive Oxides of Nitrogen in wInter tiMe (ACCRONIM)

Investigators in this project include researchers from NOAA ESRL Chemical Sciences Division, and University of Washington.
The goal is to measure the conversion of NOx to ClNO2 by uptake of N2O5 to chloride containing aerosol at a mid-continental site. This chemistry is known to occur in marine environments where sea salt provides a chloride aerosol source. Quantification of potential mid-continent ClNO2 production will give a better estimate for the local, regional and possibly global significance of halogen activation from nitrogen oxides.
