Platform: NOAA-CHEM Twin Otter Instruments

Chemiluminescence: NO, NO2, O3

NCAR NSF
instrument on aicraft rack
NCAR 2-Channel (NO & NO2) Chemiluminescence instrument

Three sample flows, each employing the chemiluminescent reaction: NO + O3 → NO2* + O2

Measurement Objectives:

  • NOx emissions and their relation to fuel type, fire characteristics, time of day (day vs. night), and meteorology.
  • Subsequent chemical evolution, especially the production of O3 and the concomitant evolution of NOx (NOx → PAN), and also nighttime production of NO3.
